This is an update on the vulture situation. Several months

ago the Borough had taken the recommendation from the USDA to place vulture

effigies in strategic places as a method of making the vultures go away. The

effigies worked! The vultures have since left the area.

If by chance you would see any stray vultures we ask that

you help us in trying to keep them away. The recommendation is to use loud

noises, such as banging pots together. It may sound strange but this works. You

can also contact the Borough office if any vultures are spotted.

Now that spring is here…plants are beginning to emerge from the cold earth, trees are covered with leaf buds, and the grass seems to be getting greener with each passing day. The crocuses, one of the first flowers of spring, emerge with their pastel colors and they are a beautiful sight to see. Our instinct is to get outdoors to feel the warm sun once again, although the air can be quite cool.

One of the best ways to experience the great outdoors is to take a walk or bike ride on the bike/hike paths running through our Borough and throughout Bucks County. You can travel far, breath in the fresh air and observe the changes in nature around. You and your family can take a nature walk in the Nature Preserve or Covered Bridge Park.

Get inspired in your own backyard by doing spring clean-up, planting bulbs and spreading seeds. It is fun to see how your gardens progress over time. It’s especially exciting to plant your own vegetable or herb garden and to actually enjoy foods grown in your own backyard! It can be something that is done with the entire family, or a quiet time to garden on your own. Either way, it is an experience you can only have in spring with the expectation of things to come.

Spring activities are in abundance in the area. Check with the Bucks County Visitor Center to find events and activities in the area. There is virtually something for everyone to do outdoors this time of year. There are many great places to see in beautiful Bucks County!

Declaration of Snow Emergency March 21-22

Summer Camp Registration Begins Today for Borough Residents!

New Britain Borough’s Summer Camp Program offers an exciting array of supervised programs including arts and crafts, theater, nature / science and sports.  Our summer camp program has been in existence at Covered Bridge Park since the 1950s! This carefree atmosphere always proves to be a fun, memorable experience where campers make new friends, learn new things and spend quality time in a beautiful natural environment!

The six week program takes place every summer at Covered Bridge Park, 229 Keeley Avenue, and is open to children ages 6 through 12. (no exceptions) Camp hours are Monday through Friday from 9 AM – 3 PM. Our program takes place at a fair-weather facility. Camp may be closed/close early in the event of rain or severe weather, such as excessive heat warnings.

When you register your child/children for camp, you will be provided with a camp program packet which includes detailed information including rules & regulations and activity schedules.

Resident Camp Fee:  $285.00

On February 5, 2018, the US Department of State hosted a Colombian Government Delegation on Economic Development with a visit to New Britain Borough & Delaware Valley University’s Small Business Entrepreneurship Center (SBEC) at Burkart Hall, 56 Keeley Avenue.

The Delaware Valley University Small Business Entrepreneurship Center at New Britain Borough is an innovative partnership created between New Britain Borough and Delaware Valley University to foster new business start-ups and economic development for students and local businesses within New Britain Borough and the surrounding region.

“New Britain Borough is excited to be working on this joint project with Delaware Valley University to enhance education and economic opportunities in this area,” commented Borough Manager, Sam Bryant. “It’s great to see our Borough and the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Center included as a model by the US Department of State which is on a nationwide tour of university towns with international delegations.”

The Department of State highlighted New Britain Borough on its International Visitor Leadership Program with the Colombian Government – “Accessing Foreign Markets: Export Logistics from Rural Roads to Ports – A Project for Colombia,” as an ideal example of how local government and universities can help grow the Colombian economy. New Britain Borough was one stop on the US Department of State’s 22-day national tour with Colombian Government officials spanning the United States from Washington DC to the Silicon Valley.

“It was an incredible honor to represent the United States in hosting foreign dignitaries to our country and New Britain Borough,” remarked Stephen Barth, Director of Economic Development for New Britain Borough. “The SBEC was a wonderful model to illustrate to the Colombian Delegation how local municipalities and educational institutions can partner to create sustainable economic opportunities.”

Colombian officials represented the coffee and cocoa industries, a women’s coalition, rural farmers collective and the Productive Projects Land Restitution Unit for Colombia.  Borough officials who participated also included Council Vice President Peter LaMontagne and Mayor David Holewinski.  William Viel, Lecturer and Co-Department Chair of Delaware Valley University’s Business and Information Management program, also attended.

New Britain Borough Bird Town is participating in the 2018 Great Backyard Bird Count and is hosting a free workshop in partnership with the Chalfont and Doylestown Bird Towns on Friday, February 2nd.

Last week, the Borough received official notice that it is the recipient of nearly $90,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding, which will be used to improve Burkart Hall and the Administrative Office.

The main goal of the grant is to make it easier and safer to travel between the two buildings.  Specifically, the grant will pay to repair the existing sidewalk at both buildings, put in new railings on the sidewalk (where needed), install striping and signage on Keeley Ave to create a pedestrian crosswalk, pave the Administrative Office parking lot, and install stormwater management facilities.

This work is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.  The only match required was the Borough Engineer’s time to oversee the project, estimated at $10,000, which will not be a new expense.

The Borough previously received CDBG funding to make Burkart Hall compliant with federal disability regulations, and included installation of an elevator, new set of stairs, an upstairs bathroom and other general improvements.

At its December 2017 meeting, Borough Council approved a new Personnel Manual for Borough staff that went into effect on January 1, 2018.

This is the first update to the Manual in nearly ten years.
