When is a Borough Hall a Literary Society?
Conceived by twelve New Britain residents, the Literary Society was organized in December 1908 with the objective: “To secure mutual improvement and advancement along literary lines and for the cultivation of the amenities of social life”. On September 13, 1913, the cornerstone of the Literary Society building was laid at 56 Keeley Avenue. The building now houses our Borough Hall.
On Saturday, September 21, 2013 the Historic Committee will present a day of celebration and activities for all ages highlighting the remarkable role the unremarkable looking building played in the history and life of the borough.
If you remember the Literary Society and have a story to share; if you have memorabilia that capture a sense of the decades between 1910 and present; if you would like to help with event planning or execution, please contact either Donna von Lipsey by telephone: 267 808-6658 or Marie Esher Coia by telephone: 215 348-1043.
